Water incidents claim two lives, injure a third

A school boy and a young man are dead and a 14-year-old boy is unconscious in serious condition following three water incidents.

A first-year student who was fishing drowned at Hamahiga Island of Uruma City over the weekend, and was confirmed dead at the scene. Only hours later, a man who had been snorkeling was found dead at the base of a waterfall at Tanaga-Kumui in Aha, Kunigami Village.

In yet another incident, a second-year student nearly drowned while he was swimming at Henoko Fishing Port in Henoko, Nago City. The boy was taken to a hospital unconscious and in serious condition. Okinawa Meteorological Observatory says that at the time of the three incidents there was a high-waves advisory, and that its forecasters had appealed for attention to high waves with surging swells being caused by effects of approaching Typhoon Ma-on to the east.

Six-year-old Shinri Miyagi, who had been fishing at a seawall in Katsuren in Uruma City, was discovered floating on the sea about 5:00 p.m. Saturday. People quickly pulled Shinri from the water, but he was already in cardiopulmonary arrest, and died in a hospital about two hours later. According to Uruma City police, Shinri visited the shore with mother and a group of 20 people, but he had been fishing alone when the water accident occurred. Investigators suspect that Shinri fell into the sea by accident and are trying to determine why.

A physical therapist from Okinawa city, 24-yer-old Shou Oshiro had been snorkeling with his friend in Tanaga-Kumui River in Aha, Nago City and drowned at 1:10 p.m. Saturday. A fired department rescue team recovered Oshiro’s body from an eight-meter depth at bottom of the sea of the river. The rescue team transported Oshiro to hospital -helicopter, but he was confirmed dead a short time later in a Nago City hospital.

The 14-year-old second-year junior high school boy nearly drowned while playing on a boat with his friends at Henoko fishing port in Henoko, Nago City at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to Nago City Police investigators, the boys flooded a boat that was in the fishing area, but the boat sank, and the victim went under water when the boat went under. A fisherman who heard the cries for help rescued the boy, and discovered that a rope attached to the boat was wound around the boy’s foot and had pulled him down. The boy was transported to a hospital in Nago City, where he remains unconscious and in serious condition, receiving treatment in an intensive care unit.
