Okinawa Assembly signals opposition to Osprey deployment

Date Posted: 2011-07-21

The Okinawa Prefectural Assembly has adopted a resolution opposing the U.S. Marine Corps’ deployment of MV-22 Osprey aircraft to the island prefecture next year.

The unanimous Assembly vote demanded Japan and the United States give up plans for relocating the tilt-rotor aircraft to Futenma Marine Corps Air Station beginning next October. It cited crashes by the military aircraft during its development phase, and expressed concern over dangers the Osprey would pose to citizens of Ginowan City.

Ginowan City’s Assembly passed its own resolution opposing the Osprey deployment last month, also by unanimous decree. Both the city and prefecture argue the two governments have been downplaying the risks involved to Okinawans by deployment of the aircraft, which had development flights suspended from January 2001 to May 2002 because of test flight crashes. The prefecture assembly has also accused the Tokyo government of “ignoring human rights and the lives of Okinawa locals.”
