Private island lease may resolve an airfield issue

Date Posted: 2011-07-14

Japan’s Defense Ministry thinks it may have a solution for a permanent site for a U.S. carrier landing practice site, and is entering talks with the owners of a private island in Kagoshima Prefecture.

Mageshima, an uninhabited island about eight square kilometers, was named by the foreign and defense ministers of Japan and the U.S. in recent two-plus-two security talks as a candidate for a Japanese Self Defense Forces facility that would permanently be used for the FCLP as part of a realignment of U.S. Forces in Japan.

The island is owned by a Tokyo-based real estate developer. Neither the developer or the Defense Ministry was answering questions on the plan, except to say they’re engaged in talks.
