Okinawa gals finish 5th, 6th at LPGA U.S. Open

Date Posted: 2011-07-14

Mika and AI Miyazato had the 1-2 lead halfway through the U.S. Women’s Open, but fell at the hands of the South Koreans to settle for fifth and a piece of sixth place in the event played in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

South Korea’s Ryu So-yeon took her South Korean friend Seo Hee-Kyung to a three-hole playoff in order to win the $3,250,000 tournament by three shots. Foul weather pushed the climax to the Women’s Open to Monday, with the 21-year-old Ryu taking the trophy after capturing six Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association titles. Cristie Kerr finished third.

Mika Miyazato held on to finish fifth with a +1 final round, while fellow Okinawan and former #1 women’s champion Ai Miyazato in a tie for sixth at +2. Ai Miyazato slips to 10th in the Women’s World Golf Rankings. Mika Miyazato picked up plenty of media attention both in Colorado and Japan with her pledge to donate all her winnings from 2011 major golf tournaments to the Red Cross for use in Great Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami disaster relief efforts. Her $121,591 prize money from last weekend’s U.S. Women’s Open will immediately go to Japan, ravished by the March 11th disaster.
