Overweight RAC flight turns back to Naha

Date Posted: 2011-07-14

A Ryukyu Air Commuter flight bound for Kita – Daito Island made a U-turn back to Naha Airport this week after flight controllers discovered it was flying overweight.

The mix-up was discovered a half-hour after the flight with 39 passengers on board was airborne on its way to Kita-Daito Island. Flight 847 had taken off at 2:17 p.m. and was cruising along when airport staff in Naha discovered that cargo was on the plane that was supposed to have been removed.

That cargo put the aircraft 34.47kg overweight, triggering an alert to the airline, and then to the flight controllers. “We will thoroughly investigate the problem and its cause,” said a Ryukyu Air Commuter official, “and devise a method of indicating to staff that freight has been unloaded. The official assured the public “we will eliminate this problem from ever happening again in the future.”

There were no injuries, and the passengers were switched to another RAC flight that finally got them to Kita-Daito Island at 4:12 p.m.
