Spiny lobster season opens with fanfare

Date Posted: 2011-07-07

Restaurateurs pushed and shoved to be first to bid on spiny lobsters Friday in Miyako-jima City, bidding over 2,000 per kilo for the first batch to be landed.

The excitement was at Nikawadori Fishing Port in Hirara, Miyako-Jima City, just as the first 24 kilograms of the tasty lobsters were put on the pier on opening day of the new spiny lobster season. Okinawa waters had been off limits April ~ June for the spiny lobsters. Bids for the initial catch went for 1,700 ~ 2,100 per kilogram.

Only hours before, the Miyako-jima Coast Guard Station busted two men for violating the fishery regulations. The two men were arrested June 30th for poaching spiny lobsters during the closed season. One was a 53-year-old man who does rental business in Gusukube, Fukuzato district of Miyako-jima City, while the second was a 45-year-old construction worker in Shimozato, Hirara district of the city.

Authorities say the two men entered Urabe Port in Hirara in a small boat at 10:35 p.m. Thursday, hours before the end of the closed season on catching spiny lobsters. The two men were caught with seven painted spiny lobsters. Authorities say they caught the men red handed, in the boat, in the port.
