Fisherman-diver drowns close to home Toya Port

Date Posted: 2011-07-07

A 62-year-old fisherman has drowned while fishing only a few hundred yards offshore from the Toya Fishing Port in Yomitan Village.

Munemasa Furugen was found unconscious in waters only 200~300 meters offshore late Saturday night after the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters received a report of a man “drowning and unconscious offshore at Toya Fishing Port”. Rescuers were quickly on the scene and transported Furugen to nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Coast Guard officials say Furugen had left the port about 7 p.m. with two other men. He was fishing using a hookah type diving equipment which provides air by a hose from the boat. Officials say the Coast Guard is investigating circumstances of Furugen’s death “in detail”.
