Kadena AmericaFest opens tomorrow

Date Posted: 2011-06-30

Kadena Air Base opens its gates tomorrow and Saturday for AmericaFest, showcasing static displays of military aircraft and equipment, but reserving the first day only for SOFA-status personnel and their families.

Friday’s AmericaFest events run 3 p.m. ~ 9 p.m., and are open only for U.S. personnel and their families. Fourteen different U.S. military aircraft will be on display, including F-15C and F-16 fighters, military refueler aircraft and the A-10 Warthog close air support aircraft. There will also be helicopters on display. The Japanese Air Self Defense Force will exhibit five different planes, including the venerable F-4, which dates back to the Vietnam War era.

AmericaFest will operate in the flight line area at Kadena. Signs designating parking areas and shuttle bus stops will be marked for visitors transiting the base. Kadena will open its gates to the Okinawa community on Saturday from noon ~ 9 p.m. Okinawans must show their ID to enter the base. Residents from other countries may contact Kadena Pass & ID at (098) 961-3437, or via email 18SFS.pass.registration@kadena.af.mil for details on gaining access to the base for AmericaFest.

Kadena hosts the AmericaFest as a means of promoting friendship and understanding between the local and military communities. Organizers say a wide variety of food booths will be serving visitors. There’s also to be a Kiddieland, games and evening fireworks.

No backpacks, banners, signs, cans, glass bottles, coolers, alcoholic beverages, cameras with lenses 300mm or greater, narcotics, firearms, knives, explosives or any other weapons that could be conceived as a weapon will be allowed into AmericaFest. Diaper bags and small purses are permitted.

Friday’s entertainment schedule includes Kluso (Americana), Shi Shi Dogs, Storm Watch classic rock band, T-Da Hip Hop Dancers, the hard rock band 12 Storms, and country-pop with Jessie James. Saturday’s community AmericaFest schedule features Storm Watch classic rock, Taiko drummers, Kluso, Shi Shi Dogs, kids’ action heroes Ryujin Mabuyer, 12 Storms and Jessie James.
