Newest TAJ Okinawa refines Indian cuisine

Curries and tandoori are attracting plenty of attention both at lunch and dinner at TAJ Okinawa’s seven-month-old Chatan restaurant.

The choices are many, and the decisions difficult, as patrons at TAJ Okinawa Chatan work their way through the menu. The restaurant’s luncheon recommendations include three curry sets that include curry, nan, salad and a soft drink. Customers pick from the chicken, keema, vegetable, seafood and the day’s special. Drink choices are available with the A, B and C sets.

Luncheon at the 50-seat restaurant is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with dinner going from 5 p.m. ~ 11 p.m. The non-smoking restaurant is open seven days a week, accepting major credit cards, U.S. dollars and Japanese yen.

Dinner features 15 different types of curry. All spices and dough are homemade, and Owner Totaro Miyazaki says all dishes come with a choice of three degrees of spiciness. The chef’s dinner recommendation is for the New Beer Set menu Happy Tandoori Set. With this Japan Update ad, it’s only ¥600. It’s quite a set, says Miyazaki, with choices of Chicken Tikka, Sheek Kabab, Chicken Tangri Kebab, Boti Kabab, Tandoori Chicken, Tandoori Prawn, served with a beer.

TAJ Okinawa Chatan is the restaurant’s second location in Okinawa, with two others on the mainland. TAJ, which means ‘existing greatly or far above even a king’, still operates the original restaurant on Gate 2 Street near Kadena Air Base, immediately behind the China Pete building. It opened in May 2010. The outfit’s chef, Tarun Ratra, first ventured to Japan in 1998, bringing along his expertise in creating delicious Indian curries. He moved to Okinawa three years ago.

TAJ Okinawa Chatan is located on Highway 23 (Kokutai Doro) from Kadena Air Base Gate 2, turn right onto Route 23. The restaurant is on the right, at the intersection with the sixth traffic light. There’s free parking for 15 cars directly in front of the building, the staff speaks English, and English menus are all available. Reservations are available at (098) 926-5554.
