Expressway drivers get break starting tomorrow

Date Posted: 2011-06-30

Ten days after the NEXCO West Japan re-imposed tolls on the Okinawa Expressway, a bit of relief is coming starting tomorrow in the form of a discount.

Following a national toll-free experiment that ended June 20th, the decisionís been made to offer discounts of up to 30% for drivers paying cash, or using ETC during regular hours. NEXCO had originally said tolls would go back to the way they were before the experiment, but Mikio Shimoji, a member of the House of Representatives from Okinawa, proposed a continued discounts system for Okinawa.

Discussions between Shimoji, NEXCO West Japan and the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism led to the decision to slash the fares through at least March 31st of next year.

With the revised tolls, the charge from Naha to Kyoda drops from the present •1,000 to •900. NEXCO officials say ETC driversí discounts on morning and afternoon hours travel will still be calculated from the current toll fees.
