Heart transplant teen uses yoga in rehab

Date Posted: 2011-06-30

“Yoga is hard, but her doctor says yoga is good.” That’s how Miyu Kaname’s father describes the Okinawa teen’s latest step toward recovery from a heart transplant operation earlier this year.

Kaname suffered from constrictive cardiomyopathy, and funds were raised by hundreds of Okinawans to send the junior high school student to Columbia University Hospital in New York City for the needed operation. Recovery has been moving along smoothly, her doctors report.

Muscle cellular tissue was extracted from her heart by cardiac catheter a few days ago, and then observed under the microscope. Doctors say Kaname is doing well, and that there are no signs of rejection.

She’s now taken on yoga as a new exercise challenge, as recommended by a friend. Her father, Toshiaki Kaname, says “breathing methods of yoga make autonomic nerves complete,” adding “I hope Miyu will continue with yoga.”
