Jazz, salsa on tap Friday, Saturday at Torii

Date Posted: 2011-06-23

First comes the salsa, and then the jazz, as Torii Beach brings music, fireworks and fun together tomorrow and Saturday evenings.

The Torii Beach Jazz & Salsa Festivale, an annual event sponsored by Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation, features many of Okinawa’s top musicians, and is open to the public. Blankets, chairs and friends are invited to the festival to enjoy the music, the Okinawa sunset, fireworks and plenty of food, beer and wine.

The festivities run 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. each evening, with Vagabund LIVE taking to the stage first on Friday for a salsa concert at 5 p.m., with a Rumba performance and then B.B..B. Samba Rhythm following. Kachimba 4Live takes the stage at 8 p.m., followed by dance performances by groups Daiquitrita, Claverio, Mamboki and Dance Lession Pati. Kachimba DX and Isamu Shimoji follow a DJ break at 9 p.m.

It’s all jazz on Sunday, with the Masao Miyasato Trio + One starting things off at 5 p.m. Ryusei Arakaki Quartet follows at 6 p.m. and OJA Jazz Orchestra at 7 p.m. Tomoaki Yara with Booze Club performs at 8 pm., Syoci Uehara Swing Quartet entertains at 9 p.m. Saturday, and Masaki Tsukayama with Spice rounds things out with a 10 p.m. performance.

Fireworks are a big part of this year’s festival with twice-nightly programs. Both Friday and Saturday there’s a 15-minute musical break at 7:45 p.m. for fireworks. The finale each evening will be fireworks at 11 pm.

Taxi and daiko services will be available, and Army officials say visitors to the Jazz & Salsa Festivale will be permitted to leave cars overnight. Unlike last year, this year there will be NO free busses running to and from the various camps and Kadena Air Base.

It’s a beach concert open to everyone, island-wide, so MWR organizers remind visitors to bring their blankets and beach chairs and friends for the evening under the stars. There’s plenty of food and drinks available; no outside food or alcoholic beverages, glass containers, pets or canopies will be permitted at the event.
