Policeman arrested for drunk driving after accident

Date Posted: 2003-11-14

A 22-year-old police officer was arrested after he crashed his car into another car that had stopped in a traffic light. Police officers who arrived at the scene to investigate Monday arrested him on suspicion of drinking and driving when they detected smell of alcohol in his breath.

According to police investigation, police officer Tetsuyu Uechi had been drinking beer and awamori previous night on his day off. After he left the restaurant, he slept in his car on a parking lot until he was awaken by traffic noise the next morning.

He told investigators that he started his car in order to drive home, as he thought he had sobered up. While he was adjusting his car stereo he got distracted and crashed into the rear of a car that had stopped in a red traffic light. A woman driver of the car he crashed into suffered a neck injury requiring one-week hospital treatment.

Police say that Uechi had started working as a policeman in April 2001. His supervisor apologized for Uechi’s misconduct, stating that it was inexcusable for a policeman to drive drunk while police are mounting an aggressive campaign to stamp out drunk driving within the prefecture. “We apologize to all people of Okinawa Prefecture. We have just started a campaign enlisting the help of taxi drivers and others to help us to stop drunk drivers, and now we discover one of our own to be guilty of the crime. We feel very ashamed indeed,” the supervisor stated.
