Nuclear sub makes brief Okinawa stop

Date Posted: 2011-06-16

A Los Angeles class nuclear submarine paid a brief visit to the U.S. Navy’s White Beach in Uruma City this week.

Authorities say the Navy submarine, the 6,082-ton Santa Fe, was at offshore anchor at White Beach from 10:30 a.m. ~ 10:52 a.m. on the 11th. Okinawa Prefecture’s U.S. Bases Counterplan Section says it tested the waters off White Beach for radioactivity. The prefecture unit reported normal levels.

The U.S. Navy says the Santa Fe was engaged in “supply and maintenance” during its Okinawa stopover.
