Oketani to stay with Ryukyu Golden Kings

Date Posted: 2011-06-09

Okinawa’s professional basketball franchise resisted the urge to do what many other clubs were doing as the 2010-2011 Basketball Japan League wound down, choosing to keep its coaching team.

Dai Oketani and his staff will be returning to the Ryukyu Golden Kings for the fall campaign. The seasoned veteran, in fact, will become one of the longest-tenured coaches in the league with the same team. The BJL is heading into its seventh season, and this will be Oketani’s fourth season with the Okinawa squad.

Assistant Coach Keith Richardson says there will not be coaching staff changes, dashing speculation changes were afoot after the Golden Kings lost the league championship to the Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix. A half-dozen BJL teams, including the champion Phoenix and the Shiga Lakestars, have replaced their head coaches. Alan Westover was chosen this week to take over the Lakestars. The 56-year-old had been coaching in Australia, being fired in February after finishing with a 6-12 record.
