DUI driver finds himself sacked by Okinawa City

Date Posted: 2011-06-09

An Okinawa City staff member who went drinking, then decided to drive instead of taking a daiko, a substitute driver service, home, then crashed into a taxi, and was arrested, has been sacked by Okinawa City officials.

The 33-year-old male City Office employee, the head of the Residentsí Section, was charged with causing a car crash while driving intoxicated. Officials say the employee elected to drive after drinking as he claims he was unable to get a daiko home. While driving, he struck a taxi about 5 a.m. in the Yogi district of Okinawa City.

He was sentenced by summary order of the Okinawa Traffic Court to pay a fine, and to have his driverís license revoked.

Okinawa City, upon learning of the incident and the conviction, dismissed the employee.
