Yaese Town Office fires embezzling employee

Date Posted: 2011-06-09

A 35-year-old Yaese Town Office staff member has been sacked by the town officials after confessing to embezzling ¥1,150,000 from a bank account he managed.

The embezzling staffer had responsibility for managing the Kochinda Town Military Land Owners’ Association, for which Yaese Town had oversight. The man confessed to taking cash 12 times while working in the Yaese Town Revenue Department during the period May 2010 ~ May 2011. He told officials he used the cash for living expenses, and to play pachinko.

Yaese Town officials picked up on the embezzlement when the man didn’t want to hand over management of the bank account to his replacement following his transfer to the Inhabits and Environmental section in April. The man disappeared for a period, being absent without leave after the transfer.

Yaese Town Mayor Takatsugu Hiyane has apologized to town residents, saying “we will make a sincere effort to prevent this kind of incident from ever happening again by enhancing our inspections of our public money system of control.” At the same time, town officials acknowledged it could have been worse. In this case, there was no substantial loss as the embezzler returned all the money, and approved a plan that does not require filing a criminal case.

Yaese Town officials admitted the deficiency in its checks and balances, and say “we want to strengthen the system by implementing audits every quarter in the future.”
