Ginowan residents gripe as Futenma noise complaints rise

Date Posted: 2011-06-03

More than 80 noise complaints were registered with the government over flight operations at Futenma Marine Corps Air Station, and the Ginowan City Office is passing them on.

The city says the number of incidents where noise exceeded 100dB jumped last month as FA-18 fighters began flying in the area, and "unusual conditions" were added as helicopters practiced turning training using five helicopters. The 80+ complaints in May compared with 120 for the entire year 2010.

In Ueojana district, which sits near the end of the runway, complaints increased from five in April to 30 in May. Nodaka district had 17 complaints, compared with none a month earlier. Residents of Isa, Ooyama, Mashiki and Ujidomari districts frequently complain because flights pass directly over their areas.

Kiyoshi Nashiro, president of the residents' association in Mashiki district of Ginowan City says, "There are many complaints from residents. The most cases are from old people, and we all have uneasiness about low flights by helicopters."
