Chinese visiting Okinawa to get multiple-entry visas

Date Posted: 2011-06-02

Japan is to begin issuing multiple visas to Chinese private travelers to Okinawa Prefecture, simplifying the entry process and promoting both business and tourism opportunities for Chinese.

Yukio Edano, Japanís Chief Cabinet Secretary, says multiple visas allow holders to enter Japan an unlimited number of times until they expire. The multiple entry visas are being issued for the first time, starting July 1st, to Chinese individuals and family members who are economically reliable. The governmentís decision to issue the visas came after Okinawa Prefecture asked for an exemption to Japanese visa policies.

Edano says the program is expected to increase the number of Chinese visitors to Okinawa, and to promote tourism here. He says the multiple visa holders will also be allowed to travel to other regions of Japan. Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto explained details of the program to Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima over the weekend.
