Annual French Wine Festival Comes to Seamen’s Club

Date Posted: 2003-11-14

Wine affectionatos around the world gather in anticipation each November 20th as the Beaujolais Nouveau Domaines, a truly great vineyards area of France, introduce the newest crop of its famous wines.

The Seamen’s Club in Naha will tap the cask of this 2003 Beaujolais Nouveau wine in a ceremony during the annual Beaujolais Nouveau wine celebration. The event gets under way at 7 o’clock on Thursday, Nov. 20. Tickets for the evening festivities are ¥3,500 in advance, ¥4,000 at the door, and includes both the wines and heavy hors d’ hoeuvres.

This year’s Beaujolais Nouveau is a deep, purplish red wine, with flavors those of great years past. Its flavors are dominated by perfumes of cutters and raspberries, presenting a fresh taste as it rolls across one’s tongue.

Similarly, the Beaujolais Villages Nouveau, a more upscale red wine, carries the nuances of red-violacees, a very powerful, beautiful aroma from its blackcurrant perfumes. Beaujolais Villages Nouveau is a fine wine to accompany any dinner.

Reservations for the Beaujolais Nouveau Party can be made by calling DSN 648-7485, or Civ. 857-1753. The Seamen’s Club is located in Naha, adjacent to the Naha Military Port and Okinawa’s Free Trade Zone.

Further amplifying the special nature of this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau celebration is the limited availability of the wines. The Summer drought in Europe, which killed more than 10,000, decimated large portions of the wine crops. This year’s vintage is about 25% smaller than usual, increasing demand around the world.
