Burgeoning use brings a new 070 cell phone prefix

Date Posted: 2011-06-01

A new cellular phone prefix is only months away as the Communications Ministry says its running out of numeric combinations for the existing 080 and 090 prefixes.

The ministry plans to add 070 as a prefix starting in fiscal 2012, as the existing prefixes could run out of numbers by 2014. Already, 160.4 million of the 180 million numbers are in use, says the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry. The new 070 prefix is currently assigned to personal handy-phone system phones.

A ministry official says the rapidly increasing number of cell phone service customers has put a strain on providers. He says providers are having to deal with rising numbers of people owning both smart phones and regular mobile phones. There are now 70 million 070 telephone number combinations available.
