Bokunen Naka’s exquisite woodblock prints are coming!

Date Posted: 2002-12-14

Artist Bokunen Naka, who enjoys a kinship with nature and feels that he is living with it, responds to this natural world through the creation of exquisite woodblock prints. Born on Izena in 1953, Bokunen has a very fertile imagination since he grew up surrounded by the lushness of a subtropical island. He worked as a graphic designer before turning to woodblock art, holding his first exhibition in 1990. It’s been a slow journey for him; however, his exquisite artwork is unique and delicate and will appeal to the love of nature in your heart. In addition to producing woodblock prints, Bokunen actively pursues sculpture and Ryukyuan poetry as well as composing lyrics.

Before starting a work of art, Bokunen visualizes an image in his mind through prayer. He then carves the image on a wood block in one sitting without even a rough copy of the image on the surface. Oblivious to the injuries he may cause himself in the process, he continues to carve with great concentration. He follows the unique technique of woodblock printing called urate saishoku, (painting colors from the back side of a sheet). Through this unique technique, he captures the spirit of nature dynamically and beautifully, with his sense of unity with nature adding a greater depth to his work.

An exhibition of Bokunen’s original works of art for his 2003 calendar will be held at Bokunen’s Art Okinawa Dec. 11-23 (closed on Tuesday Dec. 17). On exhibit will be the 13 pieces created for next year’s calendar including the cover along with a huge woodblock print titled “Muragaru Himawari” (Swarming Sunflowers). The calendar, with which you can enjoy a new work of art every month, is available for ¥3,000 at the gallery. The artist will be present from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Dec. 13. It will be a great chance to meet Bokunen, a friendly and engaging individual.

Bokunen’s Art Okinawa normally exhibits and sells his artwork, with new pieces arriving every other month. As long as nature is alive, his exquisite works will continue to be created. Bokunen’s Art Okinawa is located near Boston Club restaurant on Highway 58 in Mihama’s Chatan Town.
