Heavy rains trigger falling rocks in Yonaguni Town

Date Posted: 2011-05-26

A chunk of falling rocks the size of a small cottage has broken off a precipice on Yonaguni Island in the Yaeyama island group in far southern Okinawa following heavy rains.

The rocks crumbled near the Yonaguni sugar refining factory in Yonaguni Town’s Shiohara district, crashing into a vinyl plastic hothouse crushing the metal frame. No other damages were reported by the Yonaguni Town Office, which reported torrential rains pounding the island in the 24 hours before the rock sheered off from the landmass.

Yonaguni Island, with a population of only 1,800, is located 69 miles northeast of Taiwan, some 111 miles south of the more densely populated Ishigaki Island, also in the Yaeyama islands.
