Date Posted: 2003-11-09

There are culturally and historically significant sites in every city and town, and Okinawa City is no exception. The Okinawa City Museum has a database containing a few hundred of such sites and artifacts, many of which have a very interesting historical background. In cooperation with the City Museum, Okinawa City International Association is organizing the 2nd “Discover Okinawa City History Walking Tour” on Nov. 15. The tour starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. at a gravel lot of land near Takara Intersection. Registration is free but necessary, and begins at 9:45 a.m.

Guides and Japanese – English interpreters will be present during the tour. The sites are not commercial, but will offer participants a perfect opportunity to gain knowledge of local history and deepen the understanding of the lifestyle and values dear to Okinawans. The route winds through Noborikawa and Chibana districts, and offers a chance to visit places that not many people know about.

Organizers recommend sneakers and warm clothing. Bring own box lunch, drinks and some yen. To register in advance fax 932-8214 or e-mail to peeku@ii-okinawa.ne.jp.
