Marine Corps finishes controversial fence

Date Posted: 2011-05-19

The Marine Corps has completed work on a heavy duty fence along its south side boundary line at Camp Schwab in northern Okinawa, citing safety concerns that led to its construction.

Local residents and a citizens’ organization doesn’t agree, saying “the object of the fence is to isolate residents.” The newly constructed fence is built on top of an existing concrete infrastructure, extending to the sea. It divides Schwab beach from neighboring private land.

The Marine Corps says the usual barbed wire fencing found on military installations would have been dangerous in bad weather. A spokesman said “the purpose of the fence is to offer a higher degree of safety to local residents.” Work began on the project early this year, and confirmed completion to the Okinawa Defense Bureau less than two weeks ago.

Marine Corps and Okinawa Defense Bureau officials refused to comment about any connections between the fence and the relocation of Futenma Marine Corps Air Station from Ginowan City to Camp Schwab.
