Okinawa teen up and walking after heart transplant

Date Posted: 2011-05-11

Only a week after undergoing a heart transplant operation at Columbia University Hospital in New York Miyu Kaname is out of bed and going through walking exercises.

The 13-year-old Okinawa junior high school student has been moved from an intensive care unit at the hospital’s children’s ward to a general ward, and doctors say she’s doing well. Her mother, 49-year-old Naomi Kanami says she’s pleased with the progress. “I’m glad because she can walk, and she looks fine.” She said “the doctors are surprised because Miyu’s progress is good.”

“I’m okay,” Miyu told physical therapists. “I can walk more.” Okinawans raised more than ¥180 million to send her to New York for the transplant. Doctors say they expect to keep her for observation and therapy for several more months.
