Okinawa’s rainy season kicks in nine days early

Date Posted: 2011-05-02

It’s pretty much official, as people dodging rain deluges as they try to celebrate the start of Golden Week have already figured out. Rainy season is upon Okinawa!

The rains began filtering across Okinawa Friday night before unleashing torrents on Saturday, and that, says the Okinawa Meteorological Agency, signals the beginning of the 2011 rainy season. Rains have blanketed Okinawa and the nearby Amami Islands, the first parts of Japan to feel the seasonal downpours.

Forecasters say the annual rainy season has come nine days earlier in Okinawa, and 11 days ahead of schedule in the Amami Islands, which although close to Okinawa are part of Kagoshima Prefecture. In a normal year, June 23rd marks the end of the rainy season in Okinawa, with Amami’s rains ending June 29th.
