Bistro to host pair of jazz concerts, dinner

Date Posted: 2011-04-29

Renowned jazz musician Frank Gordon, a Wisconsin-born trumpet player who’s made Okinawa his home, is new preparing for his next concert, “A June Night!!”

Bistro Hamba-maru in Urasoe City’s to be the venue for the two June 2nd concerts, which blends an evening of New York jazz with wines and a gourmet dinner. Gordon’s tight-lipped about the specifics of the concert yet, but promises it will be an evening to remember. He certainly has plenty of options. His career spans nearly four decades, initially studying with Donald Byrd who, along with Cannonball Adderly, convinced him to further his musical prowess by enrolling in Wisconsin University.

The 73-year-old Gordon has performed across the United States and around the world, with stops in Europe, Canada, Cuba and Mexico while working with Lena Horne, Illinois Jacquet, the Charli Persip band, Art Blakey, Muhal Richard Abrams, David Murray, Hank Mobley, Charlie Haden, Clifford Jordan, Quincy Jones, Eddie Harris, the Duke Ellington band, Sam Rivers, and with his own groups. He’s a composer as well as musician, winning four NEA grants to present concerts of his music, including one with 16 strings at Merkin Hall, Manhattan, in 1988. In November 1997 three of his compositions, which were commissioned by the AACM, were premiered by the S.E.M. String Ensemble in N.Y. He has taught trumpet since 1992 at Rutgers University in Newark, and at the New School, Jamey Aebersold Jazz Camps, and in public schools. He was a founding member of Ebony Brass. He also typesets music professionally on computer and his music notation appears in books of Lewis Porter, Jackie McLean and others.

Gordon made the move to Japan a few years ago, bringing his wife Yoshiko, who was born and raised in Tokyo, back to her homeland. He’s working this “A June Night!!” concert with a theme tune by Abel Baer and Cliff Friend.

Tickets for the two shows for the Thursday, June 2nd concerts are ¥4,000 that includes dinner and wine. The shows begin at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at Bistro Hamba-Maru, located near Ahacha just off Route 330. Reservations are available by calling Yuriko at 090-7296-7509 or Yoshiko at 090-6857-6508.
