‘The Best of Okinawa Living’ perfect gift for mom, family

Date Posted: 2011-04-21

This Mother’s Day give mom the gift of Okinawa’s beauty with a copy of The Best of Okinawa Living, a 300+ page pictorial compilation produced by the award-winning staff of Okinawa Living magazine. It’s also a great gift for family and friends back home, and an upcoming book signing will have the principal writer, designer, and photographers all on hand, and attendees will receive a free postcard for every book purchased.

The book is broken up into chapters that illuminate specific subjects. Brief History of Okinawa touches on the island’s gusuku, or castles, and chronicles a few historical highlights. Places takes readers on a virtual tour of southern, central, and northern Okinawa as well as surrounding isles and islets. Okinawan Icons explores the region, the prefecture’s people, and many aspects of the island’s unique culture.

Holidays, special occasions, and festivals are a big part of Okinawan and Japanese culture. Celebrations highlights Okinawan Matsuri, or seasonal festivals, including the Naha Great Tug-of-War (a contest using the largest rope made of natural materials in the world), and the island’s distinctive Dragon Boat Races.

The Ryukyu Archipelago is well known for its natural beauty, so Nature takes readers on a brief sightseeing expedition to Okinawa’s quickly-disappearing northern forests called Yanbaru, the island’s many caves (including the massive grotto known as Gyokusendo), the prefectures many beautiful beaches, and much more.

Traditional Okinawan cuisine has recently received praise and notoriety among the health conscious, so Food & Drink sheds light on the nutritious and tasty diet of the Ryukyus. The archipelago’s greatest treasures are its living ones, so the People chapter showcases a day in the life of a few Okinawans, including their trades, philosophies, and thoughts.

Art Director/Photographer Henry Ortega, Photographer John Burgreen III, and Managing Editor/Writer/Photographer Mike Daley will be on sight to sign copies of The Best of Okinawa Living and Postcards of The Best of Okinawa Living at Foster Exchange from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. The team will also be at Kadena’s Bookmark from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday May 1. The Best of Okinawa Living is available at select AAFES locations in Okinawa for $34.95—making it the preferred gift for friends and family back home.

SOFA status personnel stopping by may also enter for a chance to win an overnight stay for two at Okinawa’s YYY resort. One winner will be chosen each day and no purchase necessary required.
