Naha, Haebaru agree to extend trash disposal contract

Date Posted: 2002-12-14

Naha City’s last waste disposal dump has been located in Haebaru Town, but the agreement for the use of the facility between the municipalities is about to expire at the end of the year. Local residents in Haebaru have long opposed the facility and complained to town officials about the smell and other problems with the dump. However, Naha City has not been able to find an alternative site for its waste.

A possibility of a temporary solution to the problem was reached at a meeting between Naha Mayor Takeshi Onaga and Haebaru Mayor Toshiyasu Shiroma on Dec. 7, when Haebaru officials agreed for the first time to Naha’s request to extend the waste disposal contract until 2006.

“Mayor Onaga assured us that Naha City will take steps to eliminate the smell and other pollution problems in exchange to the extension of the contract. I think its reasonable to extend it,” Mayor Shiroma said in an interview.

However, he has to convince residents in the vicinity of the waste dump that extending the contract is the right thing to do. People living in Arakawa, Ouna and Miyagi areas that are the nearest to the dump steadfastly oppose the extention. “I cannot understand why we have to put up with Naha’s trash a day more than is necessary. I will never agree to the extention,” a housewife living in Arakawa said.
