Taxi driver busted for drunk driving

Date Posted: 2011-04-14

A 76-year-old taxi driver has been arrested and taken off the road after being stopped in Urasoe City’s Ohira district and found to be drunk.

Urasoe Police say Masao Nakada of Ginowan City was charged with suspicion of drunk driving in violation of the Road Traffic Law. Police tests show Nakada’s blood alcohol level at triple the legal limit. He told police while being questioned “I drank beer.”

Nakada was on shift at the time he was arrested, having come on at 6 a.m. that day. He had no passengers when stopped by police.

His taxi company in central Okinawa acknowledged that the company did not conduct checks on its drivers prior to shifts to insure they’d not been drinking. Following Nakada’s arrest, a taxi company official promised “we will thoroughly train our drivers again with the aim of not allowing such a thing to ever happen again.”
