Police arrest restaurant worker for purse snatching

Date Posted: 2003-11-09

A 28-year-old restaurant worker is under arrest on suspicion of robbery and theft. Naha Police say Kiyoharu Tsuha was stopped while he was driving his motorcycle on Sunday. He had in his possession a purse that a woman had reported earlier being stolen from her.

Investigators say that Tsuha had been riding his motorcycle along Kokusai Street in Naha trying to spot women who walked alone, looked well to do and carried a purse. When he spotted one such woman, he approached her on his motorcycle from behind, snatched her purse and sped away. The woman, however, had a good look at the motorcycle and the driver, and was able to give an accurate description of the culprit to the police.

The police alerted several patrol cars operating in the area, and they spotted the suspect and ordered him to stop. Officers then noticed the handbag that matched the description the victim had reported, and asked to see its contents. Tsuha handed the bag to the officer without a word, and inside the police found the victimís health insurance card, other personal papers and Y200,000 in cash. When the police asked Tsuha more questions he confessed. He also admitted to another 10 similar robberies accomplished earlier.
