Sea Station Festival Sunday in Motobu

Date Posted: 2011-04-14

The Yambaru Umi no Eki Festival 2011 is teaming with the Motobu Naakunii folk song contest Saturday in Motobu.

The Yambaru Umi no Eki, also known as the Sea Station Festival, runs 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Sea Station in Motobu, located by the Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa. Admission to both the Sea Festival and the folk song competition is free.

This year’s event is being staged against the backdrop of the March 11th great earthquake and tsunami in mainland Japan, and fundraising and donations are two key elements of the festival. Donation collection boxes will be strategically placed around the festival grounds.

The folk song competition, the Motobu Naakunii, is a key festival event, along with children’s live fish and seaweed catching contests, a tuna fish cutting show, an auction, Eisaa dance for children, live music and a variety of food and drink booths.

Children’s Eisaa dance by Motobu Town children begins at 2 p.m., with the fish and seaweed catching contest starting at 3:30 p.m. is open to the first 70 children ages 5-12 who register at the event. Live music takes place on stage from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., followed by the 8th Motobu folk song contest beginning at 6 p.m.

Organizers say kids are welcome, but pets are prohibited at the festival site.
Yambaru Sea Station is located on the right just before Expo Park next to Hotel Mahaina.
