Performers join Operation Phoenix for fundraiser

Date Posted: 2011-04-07

A three-day fundraiser dubbed Operation Phoenix kicks off tomorrow at the roadside park on Kaichu Douro, Uruma City, to raise funds for victims of the March 11th Great Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami.

More than a dozen Okinawa bands and singers will take to the stage at Kaichu Douro, the road with the long bridge on the way to Ikei Island, encouraging attendees to donate generously to the Japan Red Cross Society through the Uruma City Office. Admission to the Friday – Sunday event is free, with Red Cross donation boxes set up to aid victims.

Organizer Roland Henault encourages the public to turn out in large numbers to support the event, the bands and the earthquake and tsunami victims. “Why?” he asks. “There really is no reason, but while you lay in your bed at night knowing your own children and family are safe and sound, take a moment to think about the many people who are cold and hungry, grieving for lost friends and family members.” Henault reminds everyone he’s talking to that “those same people only a couple weeks ago had homes with family to go home to every day, just like most of us. Then literally, in moments, they had it all washed away.”

Friday’s concert starts at 6 p.m. with 2Side1Brain, Shaolong To the Sky, Fake Kingz and others. Saturday’s noon to 9 p.m. concert series features David Ralston, the Majestics, Gun Foad, Coconut Telegraph and more, while Sunday’s noon to sunset performance includes Kluso, Paul & Gane dblbss, and other bands.

Henault says people can also bring items to donate to the concert. Operation Phoenix is looking for diapers for babies and adults, baby food and formula, tissue paper, wet naps, and small towels. All donated items will be handled by Uruma City, which has supply channels in place to deliver the goods to the disaster stricken region.

The latest information on performers and performance times for the Operation Phoenix fundraiser is on the organizers’ website, www.ryucon.com and www.facebook.com/Operation.Phoenix.311
