Power outage affects 10% of Urasoe City households

Date Posted: 2011-04-06

Residents and visitors transiting Urasoe City got a Sunday afternoon surprise when the lights and traffic lights went out as the city experienced a power outage.

The brief outage initially effected the entire city of 110,000, with the primary power breakdown impacting some 4,200 households in Minatogawa, Iso and Gusukuma districts, as well as five others. The Okinawa Electric Power Company is still trying to figure the cause of the 25-minute outage that started at 3:13 p.m., but have traced it to a Gusukuma electricity substation that was damaged.

The power outage did not affect Camp Kinser, which is close to the area but served by a different electric substation. An event in progress at the Urasoe City Citizens Gymnasium, the 63rd Okiten, there was confusion but staff opened gym drapes to bring sunshine and light to the facility. Limits were placed on admission during the outage, leading to 100-meter-long lines formed as people waited.

Urasoe City Police sent patrols to major intersections for traffic control, including along Highway 58. No traffic accidents were reported.
