Okinawa historical musical set for two Saturday performances

Date Posted: 2011-03-31

An Okinawan musical that traces the Ryukyu Kingdom’s history through modern times is set for a pair of performances Saturday at the Okinawa City Civic Hall.

Ayamiya no Utage takes patrons on a time travel over the past 400 years to the present, as seen through the eyes of a young girl. It depicts events of the Satsuma invasion and World War II, through the present. In conjunction with the musical performances, and Okinawan Craft Fair featuring a variety of food booths will take place outside the venue.

The first of two performances begins at 1 p.m., with doors of the Civic Hall opening at noon. The second performance starts at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. Organizers encourage people to use taxis to attend because of limited parking spaces at the Civic Hall, located near Kadena Air Base Gate 2.

Advance tickets are available at Teruya Music and Family Mart convenience stores. S seats are ¥3,500 and ¥2,800, with advance B seats on sale at ¥2,000. Ticket prices at the door are ¥500 more for each seating category. Children under age 3 are not admitted.

To reach Okinawa City Civic Hall, take a left turn down the ramp from Kadena Gate 2. The Civic Hall is on the right, about 500 meters after the turn at Gate 2.
