Cops arrest mother for abandoning baby’s body

Date Posted: 2011-03-31

The mother of a baby girl whose body was found abandoned in a
Yomitan Village restaurant parking lot earlier this month has been arrested and charged with abandoning the child’s corpse.

“I gave birth to a baby girl in my house,” says Chigusa Taira, “and dumped her.” The 30-year-old’s family said they didn’t notice Taira’s pregnancy. She lived in an Uruma City apartment together with three children and her mother.

Police had received a call from a local resident asking they “please investigate because something stinks bad here” in a restaurant parking lot in Yomitan’s Iramina district. The ‘stinky’ police found was the body of a newborn infant wrapped in clothing and a plastic bag. Police determined tht Taira put the girl’s body in a small backpack and then dumped in the parking lot of an out-of-business restaurant. Kadena Police say the infant girl weighed 3,000 grams and was 49cm long. They say the baby’s umbilical cord was still attached.

The baby’s body was rolled up in clothes and a plastic bag. Kadena Police arrested Taira after figuring out who she was from an article left at the crime scene.
