Okinawa most popular for domestic holiday travel

Date Posted: 2002-12-14

Okinawa is the most popular destination for those who are planning to take a domestic holiday trip over the nine-day year-end holiday season, according to a survey conducted by JTB, the largest travel agency in Japan together with air carriers. More than 2000 people responded to the survey. Following Okinawa, Tokyo is the second most popular destination, and then Hokkaido, Aomori and Akita, all in northern part of the country.

Going overseas, however, is the trend for Japanese this year as 667,000 people have made reservations for year-end trips. The figure represents a whopping 33.4 percent increase over the number last year and is second only to 1996 when 680,000 people went overseas for the New Year.

The most popular overseas destination is China, including Taiwan that accounts for 48.5 percent of the reservations. The second is Europe followed by Korea. The number of travelers to North America is 24.4 percent higher that a year ago, but is still lower than two years ago.

The surveyors said that overall, domestic travel is still in slump mainly because the dire economic straits that the country continues to see. They say that people head overseas because they want to get away from the gloom at home. Another factor is that this year’s calendar provides a nine-day stretch time off for most wage earners.
