Patent transfer strengthens molecular imaging at OISTDate Posted: 2011-03-04 The Shidec Company of Sweeden has transferred the molecule imaging technology rights to OIST and the school's resident scholar at the Structure Cytobiology Unit. The technology allows researchers to see the fine structure of a molecule in a cell in three dimensions using high speed computer or electron microscope techniques. Shidec says it passed the technology to OIST because of Dr. Ulf Skoglund's research in MET, which earlier involved collaborations with the pharmaceutical industry to visualize the molecular details of antibody-antigen binding, protein-protein complexes, virus structures and various receptor interactions in cellular membranes. Dr. Skoglund is now the principal investigator at OIST's Structural Cellular Biology Unit, where OIST plans to further develop the potential of MET in collaboration with academic and industrial institutions active in biological research, biomedical developments and drug discovery. "This is a very exciting development," says Dr. Skoglund. "This patent portfolio and ongoing developments will contribute to establishing OIST as a significant actor in the interdisciplinary field of molecular imaging technology, and could lead to setting up related business opportunities here in Okinawa. The Okianwa Institute of Science and Technology is a new graduate university conducting world-class research and education in science and technology. OIST now has 27 research units with 170 researchers carrying out multi-disciplinary research in neuroscience, molecular sciences mathematical and computational biology and environmental science. |
