Mini-Cooper Day includes heart patient charity event

Date Posted: 2011-02-25

Mini-Cooper automobile owners are a fervent bunch, convinced they have the best cars in the world, and they're gathering this weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the British vehicle.

Okinawa Mini Day is Sunday at Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibina in Tomigusuku City's Toyozaki area, where dozens upon dozens of the small automobiles will gather for a contest, exhibition and friendship event. Okinawa Mini Day runs 10 a.m. ~ 8 p.m., with admission free. Japanese will flock to Okinawa from across the nation for the event, which has been advertising for months.

A highlight of the day will be a charity event for Miu Kaname, a Naha City junior high school student who's headed to the United States next month for heart surgery. Okinawa has rallied over the past several months to raise millions of yen to cover costs of the trip and surgery for the 12-year-old at Columbia University Hospital in New York.

Okinawan groups and individuals have already raised more than エ197 million.

Okinawa Mini Day is free, and open to the general public as well as Mini-Cooper owners.
