Trapped rock-climbing Kadena airmen rescued

Date Posted: 2011-02-25

Heavy rains sweeping across Okinawa over the weekend trapped a trio of Kadena-based airmen rock climbing at Cape Zampa in Yomitan Village.

The men, who Kadena Police described as 19-31 years of age, had been climbing around the Cape when rains made the rock walls slippery and dangerous, prohibiting their movement. An emergency 119 call at 5:51 p.m. brought Kadena police and fire rescue units to the scene, along with a helicopter and patrol boat from the Japan Coast Guard.

It took rescue units about three hours to extricate the men from the craggy rocks and bring them to safety. None was injured.
