Three new dolphins arrive at Ocean Expo Park

Date Posted: 2002-12-14

The five dolphins starring in the daily dolphin show at Okichan Theater in Okinawa Ocean Expo Memorial Park in Motobu, are nearing their retirement as all of them have been in the park about 30 years. That has prompted officials at the park to look for new stars for the popular show.

The search finally paid of last week when the park acquired two three-year-old dolphins that were recently captured off Chiba Prefecture coast. The two were safely transported to Okinawa by air on Dec. 9.

According to park officials carrying live dolphins is a tricky business as they easily become seasick in small tanks if the water around them moves because of turbulence or some other reason. In order to avoid that the dolphins had to be propped up inside the tanks and extra walls had to be installed to prevent the water whirling around. The two future stars are now in training and will be presented to the public in the near future.
