Energy conservation team meets Kubasaki students

Date Posted: 2011-02-25

Energy conservation and ways to increase renewable energy were presented to enthusiastic Kubasaki High School students earlier this month by a local group wanting to participate in the World Solar Challenge.

The Team Okinawa, which specializes in creating good stewardship energy resources, promoting energy conservation and use of renewable energy sources, gave students a day to remember as they conducted seminars and let the teens ride in a solar car. The Team Okinawa, comprised of students from The University of the Ryukyus, Tomishiro City Nagamine Junior High, and Okinawa Nambu Technical High School in 2009, is preparing the car to participate in team competitions slated to be held in Australia in October.

School presentations are something The Team Okinawa enjoys doing, sharing first classroom presentations and then giving excited students rides in the solar car that can reach speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour.

Team member Satoru Iizuka approached the presentation to American students with some concerns. "I felt anxiety that the Kubasaki High School students would think our presentation uninteresting, but what could I do?" Iizuka asked. "However, they welcomed me with applause, and it was good I could hold the lesson on base as an object of global understanding.

Kubasaki High School Teacher John Wallden though it was important, too. "I want to tell students that energy conservation and involvement in improving our world is something that even high school students can do at their level." The Team Okinawa focused its lesson on social enlightenment about needs for more energy education, as well as energy conservation.
