Golden Kings first in BJ League to ink radio deal

Date Posted: 2011-02-18

The Ryukyu Golden Kings are adding a dimension to Basketball Japan League action as the season moves toward an exciting climax; hardwood action is going live on Radio Okinawa.

Radio Okinawa will, under the just-announced deal, partner with 864 AM Radio Okinawa for play-by-play action of the team's 12 remaining regular season home games. Ryutaro Miyata heads the play-by-play action team, sharing the broadcast booth with an analyst of contests involving the Golden Kings, who remain in contention for at least a Western Conference championship this season.

The Golden Kings won the Basketball Japan League title two years ago, and worked into the Final Four last season. The Ryukyu radio deal is the first in the league's history, a move observers hope will lead to full coverage of Okinawa professional basketball action next year.

Radio Okinawa and the Golden Kings say the broadcasts will only be heard on Okinawa. There will be no internet service. Team officials see the pact as a means of further enhancing the Golden Kings image within the Okinawa community, generating additional community support for top players including Jeff Newton, Anthony McHenry, David Palmer, Tsubasa Yonamine, Shigeyuki Kinjo and Naoto Kosuge.
