Thieves heist ¥12.7 million from money transport van

Date Posted: 2002-12-14

Thieves who grabbed two bags of money from a money transport van that was parked on a parking lot of a supermarket in Nishihara got away with over ¥12 million in cash, Dec. 9. The two-man crew of the card had been making its regular rounds collecting the proceeds of the daily sales of several supermarkets, when they stopped at one of the shops on their route. When they returned to the car five minutes later they noticed its tailgate open. They also noticed that the lock had been broken and two of the 17 bags containing cash were missing.

Urasoe Police investigating the theft suspect that someone who is familiar with the schedule and route of the transport is involved in the heist. “As this heist happened very early in the morning when there’s very little traffic on Hwy 329 making getaway easy, we suspect that the perpetrator(s) waited on the parking lot, broke the door of the van as soon as the crew went inside the shop, grabbed the bags and drove away. That does not happen without careful planning and inside knowledge of the route and timetable of the money transport,” a spokesman for Urasoe Police said. The police has no suspects, but the investigation continues.
