New noise pollution lawsuit being filed over U.S. bases

Date Posted: 2011-02-11

Refusing to take no for an answer, more than 22,000 Okinawans are joining in a lawsuit to be filed to halt early morning and late night noise pollution at American bases.

The new lawsuit comes on the heels of a Japan Supreme Court decision only a month ago that rejected an argument by 5,540 plaintiffs that flights at Kadena Air Base should be halted. The suit will be filed March 28th in Naha District Court, taking both the Japanese and U.S. governments to task. It's the third such suit seeking damages for Kadena aircraft noise, and demanding suspension of flights.

Toshio Ikemiyagi, the top attorney for 22,063 plaintiffs, says the new suit reflects the anger of Okinawans about the current situation that burdens local citizens, but doesn't give relief from the heavy burden they must carry hosting U.S. military installations.
