Okinawa Red Cross faces serious shortage of blood

Date Posted: 2002-12-14

Officials at Okinawa Red Cross are ringing emergency bells as the blood donations this year have reached only 53 percent of the target. They are pleading for the public to step to the plate and donate blood whenever they can.

“The shortage of blood is a big problem, as we cannot rely on getting supplies from other prefectures. They have the same situation,” a Red Cross official said. “We are especially short of O and AB-type of blood as we have reached only 40 percent of the target with those blood types.”

Cold weather can be at fault, the official said. “Every year when the weather gets cold, people disappear. They don’t even come to our center for blood donations,” he complained. “Another reason is that people are busy preparing for the year end.”

To combat the situation, the Red Cross is setting up a mobile blood donation center in front of the Okinawa Prefectural Hall. “As blood cannot be made artificially, the only source is donations from the public, so please come,” the official concluded.
