Dazzling and popular at Bistro Hamba Maru

Date Posted: 2011-02-04

Nestled away in a quiet residential neighborhood far from the maddening traffic sits Bistro Hamba Maru, serving up nearly two dozen different specialty dishes for discerning customers. Bistro Hamba Maru also has the distinction of being able to count among its patrons former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, who enjoyed an evening there during the 2000 Okinawa Summit.

Hidden away in a building designed like a mountain hut in Urasoe City, owner Ryoji Kinjo has created a homey atmosphere and tastes for every palate. What's important, he stresses, is that everything coming from his kitchen-20 different special dishes every single dayis made with fresh, local ingredients.

He's proud of the lamb steak with black pepper, slow cooked to tenderness and accented by the pepper, for エ1,575. His other special is a set of Rainbow Rolls for エ924. The rolls use fresh Okinawa fish, along with quality local ingredients. There's also a good spaghetti dish with homemade sauce for only エ819.

Hamba Maru has menus in Japanese, English and Korean. The restaurant is open daily 5 p.m. ~ 12:30 a.m. Plenty of free parking is available.

To get to Bistro Hamba Maru from Kadena and Foster, go south on Hwy 58 to the intersection just before Kinser Pizza House gate. Turn left towards Urasoe City Office until you see a McDonald.s on the left. Immediately next to McDonald's turn left steep down onto a small alley. At the bottom of the hill turn right and continue about 100 meters. Bistro Hamba Maru is ahead and easily recognized for the Christmas-like illumination lining its roof.
