Dead fish discovered at second Okinawa location

Date Posted: 2011-02-04

Dozens of dead fish have been found in local waters at two separate locations in two consecutive days.

The latest episode was discovered at Yuuhi River as it flows through the Gangara Valley, a part of Okinawa World theme park in Tamagusuku, Nanjo City. The 100+ dead fish were discovered by a guide conducting tours.

Officials say it's too early to tell what the cause of death was.

An earlier incident at Ryutan Pond in Shuri, Naha City, has confirmed many dead fish, including tilapia and plecostomus. Staff members of the Nanbu Welfare and Health Center gathered the dead fish, and are now studying them to determine if underwater oxygen content or agricultural chemicals could have played a role in the deaths.

One staff member who's been investigating the incident concludes one possible cause is low water temperature, an inflow of agricultural chemicals, a shortage of oxygen in the water, or death by suffocation due to mud filling the gills of the fish. Takumi Takahasi, a guide in the Gangala Valley, says "I don't know the relation of cause and effect, but there was a report from one member that ‘there was a smell like human waste from the river' on January 24th. I feel uneasy about environmental pollution."
