Nuclear subs pay brief calls at White Beach

Date Posted: 2011-02-04

Two Los Angeles class nuclear submarines ventured into the U.S. Navy's White Beach Navy Base this week, but they didn't overstay their welcome.

The Guam-based submarines, USS Buffalo and USS San Francisco, made calls to the American base in Uruma City for what the military called "supplies and maintenance". The USS Buffalo was anchored from 12:33 ~ 12:47 p.m., while the USS San Francisco followed from 2:19 p.m. ~ 2:37 p.m.

The Okinawa Prefecture Countermeasure Division says its investigation of the two submarines' visit showed radioactivity off White Beach port area at normal levels. The USS San Francisco, which has seen Apra Harbor in Guam as home port since 2002, was involved in an underwater collision with an undersea mountain 350 miles from Guam, killing one sailor and injuring 22 others. The submarine's nuclear reactor was not damaged.
